In the beginning.. domain names were limited to certain “extensions” or endings. These “Top Level Domains” or (TLDs) were setup in the 90s. Since then almost all internet devices and browsers and app have used a single list, – if your TLD (.com, .co.uk, .org) was on the list – it resolved to a website of the owners selection.

Originally, each country got its own, and there were the original 7 Top Level Domains – .com .net and .org, with .gov and .edu and a couple of other rarely used.
